Hands-On Courses & Workshops for Practitioners (shoe designers, technical developers, innovators and faculty of footwear schools)
These digital skills workshops are focused on giving hands-on, in-depth training on exactly what footwear professionals doing the actual work need related to digital software and tools as well as tips and best practices to managing workflows to be more productive. It is a unique opportunity to skill up across several topics concentrated in a few days versus unconnected training spread through the year.

Background and What You Can Expect To Learn
Solving the Digital Skills Gap
One of the big obstacles in creating a smooth digital workflow is a lack of skills and knowledge among the people doing the actual work with digital applications. FLOW aims to narrow the skills and knowledge gap for these workers through a full week of workshops and short courses. These range from 1–2 hour case studies to 1-day workshops and full-week intensive courses.
Who Should Attend
These educational programs are aimed at those in the footwear industry doing the actual work with digital tools or training those to do it, including: designers, technical developers, innovators, and faculty of footwear schools. The programs feature training on all levels from beginner to advanced, covering all kinds of 3D design software and digital manufacturing tools.
Topics and Tools Covered
There will be courses for those who are just getting started with software like Blendr, Rhino, or Modo, as well as intermediate training for people expanding their horizons into generative design and 3D printing with programs such as Grasshopper and Ntopology. There will also be several master classes around how to materialize big data into designs never thought possible. Knowledge on digital manufacturing techniques like 3D printing and robotics will be an integral part of the program.
The educational workshops are set up and run by the footwearists. Courses run all week, date TBA, outside Portland at the University of Oregon (Eugene). If you have any special training needs or wishes for courses, or if you work for a software company and would you like to have training on your software included in the program, please contact us.
Beginner course: Open-source digital design flow for footwear

Intermediate course: 3D Ninja—Connecting 2D and 3D like a pro
For footwear designers with intermediate level digital design skills who would like to optimize workflow. If you know a little Photoshop, Illustrator, Modo and Zbrush, plus the basics of Rhino and/or Blender, this course will help you create ultra fast, ultra effective and ultra fun shortcuts that will bring your digital design speed to record heights! Learn how to turn to a grayscale Photoshop image into an interactive 3D model, edit several 3D models at the same time, solve bottlenecks in the digital design process, and more. REGISTER NOW
Intermediate course: Design for digital manufacturing
A hands-on, in-depth 3D knitting and printing course where you will be designing through advanced prototyping depending on your skill level in 3D design. Learn to fully understand different 3D printing and knitting technologies so you can be as creative as possible with them, without reinventing the wheel, creating wearable shoe designs that can actually be manufactured in series using just knitting machines and 3D printers. Create shoes in entirely different ways, with custom aesthetics and functionalities and with constructions that are much more sustainable than what we see on the market now, opening up great opportunities for local manufacturing. Advanced course: Materializing data into footwear
A fantastic opportunity for designers who want to bring their Rhino and Grasshopper skills to the next level by adding Python scripting, so they can generate custom footwear in a matter of seconds. You will learn how to create algorithms with Python scripting and apply those to an existing shoe model in Grasshopper, as well as how to create your own interactive shoe model in Grasshopper.
